Dear Mom and Dad,

Things are going pretty good, we are camped out at Valley Forge for this winter. Its very tight sleeping spaces around here, for every 12 men there is a very small about 15 foot long 15 foot wide hut with one fire place. We are about 2 feet below ground so our hut has a dirt floor. There not very nice, you can feel the draft at night the cold wind. Its getting really hard to get around down here. The farmers try and hid there horses so that we can't use them to get supplies. There isn't much to eat, so we eat things like firecake which is just water and flower. I can't wait to come home to get some homemade cooking from mom. This is nothing like our farm house at home. Things are so much different than I thought they would be in the army. Although I'm hoping that the weather will start picking up the temperature has been in the 20s and 30s this past week. Spring is coming soon and I can wait for the warm weather.

Washington has been showing us the way these past couple weeks, hes really stepped up and shown us how to get things done around here. Hes the only one getting us through at this point. He has been really boosting everyone sprits around camp, telling us that we can take this and its only going to get better with more wins to come. Also that this is going to be over very soon. I think that hes trying to make everything look better right now because theres a re-enlistment coming up in the spring for the army. Hes saying that the things we are going through right now will be worth it after this is all said and done. But with all of this courage he is showing and pride for the army its hard not to believe what hes telling us. I mean things are not looking the best but hes doing his best to make everything better around here.

I have been doing alot of thinking lately about this spring and the re-enlistment. Although i have learned alot from the Army, another thing i have learned that its something that i went into with all the wrong reasons. I came in thinking that i was going to see the country, but after this past 6 months i have seen as much of the country as i need to see. I'm really glad that i have been in the Army for this long but, I'm really looking forward to coming home to somewhere its warm and safe. I think that things here are only going to get worse, cause of the many battle we have lost. I think that if i continue to stay in the army that this will be the death of me. I'm ready to come home and ready to see my family again.

Sincerely,
Charley Smith

Roger Sherman

Roger Sherman was born April 19, 1721 in Newton Massachusetts. Hes education didn't extend past grammar school. He wasn't always a powerful Political lawyer. He grew up in Milford, Connecticut, which is the state he ended up representing after becoming a politician. He quickly introduced himself in civil and religious affairs, becoming one of the towns leading citizens and than town clerk of New Milford, Connecticut. He also was a Representative and Senator in the new republic. Not long after that he became country Surveyor. He was admitted to the Bar of Litchfield, Connecticut in 1754 and he was also chosen to represent New Milford in the Connecticut General Assembly from 1755 to 1761. Than served as the Upper House of the Connecticut Gernal Assembly until 1785. There were many things that Roger Sherman accomplished without even a high school diploma, including, being appointed justice of the peace in 1762, judge of the court of common pleas in 1765, and also justice of the Superior Court Of Connecticut from 1766 to 1789 and that's would be when he left to become part of the United States Congress.

When the Revolutionary War started in 1775 Sherman was appointed to the Connecticut Governor's Council of Safety and also commissary to the Connecticut Troops. He was also Elected to the Continental Congress in 1774 and served very actively throughout the War. He Served on the Committee of Five that drafted the Declaration Of Independence. Roger Sherman was the only person to sign all four great state papers of the U.S, Which were The Articles of Association, The Declaration of Independence, the Articles of Confederation and the Constitution. Other people who signed the Constitution with Roger Sherman were: From Connecticut William Samuel, Georgia William Few, Pennsylvania Benjamin Franklin, Delaware George Read, Maryland , Maryland Daniel Carroll, Massachusetts Rufus King , New Hampshire John Landon, New Jersey William Livingston, New York Alexander Hamilton, North Carolina William Blount, South Carolina Charles Pinckney, Rhode Island there was no one sent to Constitutional Convention, Virgina James Madison.

Roger Sherman participated in the Revolutionary War the way he did was because of the way that he was brought up. His Family was deeply into the policial Field. He was tough many things leading up to the Revolutionary War that lead him to be so successful during the War. Many things in his younger life prepaid him for his future job that he held as signing the Four Major drafts. Roger Sherman was a major player in the Revolutionary War, he did alot of things to make the Americans over come England. He wasn't one of the front line people but he showed most of his skills in the background. He took care of alot of the talking and taking care of alot of things. Roger Sherman was a man that got things done. There are many things that this man did that shows his skills that helps the Americans take down England. This was all because of his hatred for England that got alot of these things done.

Roger Sherman showed everything he had, drafting the four major event of the United States. To be a man that drafts all four and signs all of them is a very great historical moment. He deserves all of the historical recognition that he gets. All of the things that he did during this Revolutionary War proves that he deserves all of the historical recognition that he can get. People of his time probably didn't realize that he was a major play in the Revolutionary War but looking back into it and re-reading through things that he did, with the little education that he had was impressive.

Book Portfolio

Animal Farm

Afrer reading this book Animal Farm by George Orwell most people would realize alot of things about different belifs. Lots of things in the book like different events show different events in history. Like when the animals from the farm defeat the farmer showing Animalism, they teamed up and formulate main principles of what they needed to do to over take the farmer. Also after all the amimals are ruled by Napoleon and the Animalism, they were educated of the principles of Animalism. Napoleon takes over defets his partner and takes it all for himself, just like everyother leader in history of any country. They always are looking out for themself before anyone else. Showing this theme throughout history would be showing how there are alot of things that are always happening. This is one of the big thing that are still happening, over ruling and over taking of your own people.

Napoleon was a very big part of this over powering, and this belif of Animalism. He showed the animals everything that they knew and believed that was right. When all the animals were grathered in the big barn. He tells them of a dream he has had in which all animals live together with no humans being able to control them. After teaching the animals to read and Napolen teaching them the principles of Animalism. Mr. Jones appears again to take back his farm, the animals defeat him again. Which would be known as the Battle of the Cowshed. Napoleon and Snowball begin to struggle with each other for power. Snowball thinks to build a windmill, but Napoleon opposes the plan. At the meeting to vote on whether to take up the project, Snowball gives speech. Napoleon gives only a brief retort, then makes a noise, and nine attack dogs, the puppies that he had been training burst into the barn and chase Snowball from the farm. Than he became leader of the Animal Farm and declares that there will be no more meetings. From that point on the pigs alone will make all of the decisions. All for the good of every animal. It shows how Napoleon was trying to take over, rule everyone and take out his partner in the meantime.

Any type of leader of president of any country has always gone to far and used more power than they should of, showing that they wanted to rule people more than do whats right. This type of thing as always happened, thoughtout history there have been many leaders or presidents that have over ruled what is right with controling everything. Things like going to war, with only one persons intrest in it. That would be over taking the country for the better intrest of yourself. During the book Napoleon takes over defets this partner and takes it all for himself, just like everyother leader in history of any country. They always are looking out for themself before anyone else. Showing this theme throughout history would be showing how there are alot of things that are always happening. This is one of the big thing that are still happening, over ruling and over taking of your own people.

In every society there are leaders who, if given the chance will abuse thier power. This book teachs that there are certian people that shouldn't be leaders of any type of society. They also so how over powering people or animals in this case doesn't always work out in your favor. When reading this book you think of how this would be played out with people, its symbolizes alot of things, and shows alot of things that happen in our world too. There has alway been leaders over ruling there people, telling them the things that they should learn. And also teaching them everything they need to know to defeat someone that that the leaders is enimies with. This book showed its theme all the way throughout the book, and having alot of things showing it. Different symbols standing for everything. Important that the theme was understood, because there were alot of things underneath the theme that you had to get the theme to understand.

Exam #4

Essay #1 Boston massacre/ closing statement

The Boston Massacre was the killing of five colonists by British soldiers on March 5, 1770. A bad situation due to British military in Boston got heated and turned into a brawls between soldiers and citizens of the town, and than turned into troops shooting their guns after being attacked by a crowd. Three citizens were killed at the scene of the shooting, and two died after the fact.
The crowd of citizens are to blame for the shooting, and the hole fact of the Boston Massacre. It was seen by many people that the soldiers were attacked before the shooting, by snowballs and also hit by sticks. This was all before firing there guns. Showing that Preston didn't tell his men to fire there were witnesses telling that there was another officer standing behind Preston who said fire.
The consequence for the people involved would be hard to hand out, there were to many stories to face the fact of who did say fire and who's fault it really was. Due to the fact that there were so many witnesses and so many stories its hard to tell who was responsible for the firing and who wasn't. Although if the soldiers weren't at fault, as showing more of the witnesses show this, the crowd show be punished. This means that everyone beside the soldiers that were involved in this would be at fault.

Essay #2 Going to war with Britain

The 13 colonies have the right to rebel because British government tried to rule the colonies. The British demanded that the colonists pay taxes on such things as sugar and tea that the colonists bought from England. The colonists refused to pay the taxes, because they did not have a voice in approving the laws that created the taxes. They were not represented in the British government.
One big reason for the colonies to rebel against the British would be that they were taxing them. This was deported things that the colonies didn't have control over taxing. Or even the price of the tax. Another reason would be that the British thought that they could just have there government and over rule everything that had to do with the colonies. If they didn't have a voice to tell what they wanted why would they pay tax on something that is already theres...
There wouldn't be much of a future for America as of this time period. With the British ruling everyone and everything around, how could their be anything to look forward to like America. The British are in complete control at this point.

The founding of English colonies in modern Massachusetts combined a strange mix of idealism and violence. The story of Mile Standish shows many different things including; Miles Standish contributed important protection to the early colonies by using violence, Benjamin Church provided vital leadership to protect the colonies during King Philip's War, and also Despite all of this violence, the colonies were also founded on religious idealism. This all ties into American history because it is important to understand the full history of these areas because this is what Americans generally consider to be our nation's beginning.
Miles Standish contributed important protection to the early colonies by using violence. Miles Standish and his men where after Corbitant because he thought he was trying to fight agaisnt his men which were the pisggrams. He ended up surrounding the wigwams and scaring the indains so bad that they were trying to get out anyway they could, they were trying to run out of the walls. Miles Standish also killed Wicawaset when they invited him to dinner and he stabed him with his own knife. This happened because Wicawaset was trying to make friends with him, because he thought that it would make it so they wouldn't fight him. All of these actions show how Mile Standish was violient with eveything he did towards the indains. He never wanted them anywhere the pilgrams. It provies how he was trying to protect the pilgrams. He also used violence to start the colony.
Benjamin Church provided vital leadership to protect the colonies during King Philip's War. Benjamin Church captured 60 indians with just 6 men to protect the colony. He also saved his 20 men and got them across the river, when there was around 300 men trying to kill them. Benjamin tries and puts King Philip on a post trying to kill him. He ends up killing King Philip in the end, because he was a threat to the colony. The colony that Benjamin Church was trying to build. He didn't want anyone getting in the way of building his colony. Benjamin Church showed his leadership quilties when he takes over, and shows his men that he will protect them. And also taking everything in his own has instead of putting things on other people to do. This is because he wants to keep his colony and not have any of this men killed.
Despite all of this violence, the colonies were also founded on religious idealism. They all thought that it was right for everyone to be a puritan, they wanted everyone to be a puritan. They came to this new place because they wanted religous freedom for themselves, and they also thought that no one else would want to be anyother type of religium than they did. All of them wanted everyone to be able to read and write. This was because everyone was had to read the bible. They thought everything should be religious. Also they all founded the school of Harvard, which started out as just a bible school. Benjamin Churchs leadership helped protect the colonies and made them posibile for them to contiue to be safe.
All of the English found the colony by using violence and ideaism. When Mile Standish procted the pisgrams from the indians and two men that he thought would kill them. Benjamin Church showed how brave he was, and how much of a leader he was. It shows how this is different story than what people think of how this country started out, it would be a little darker than most people would think.

Final Essay

During the Russian Revolution there were alot of people who thought differently about where the money, land and everything else should be. some thought it should be evenly spread between all. That's what the peasants thought. They thought that the land should belong to the people that work, most thought that the workers should get the benefits. During the war and another time they were the hardest workers, and they also worked more longer hours than most. With working that much and not even having any money to show for it, there would be alot of changes with the economic conditions. How the French Revolution economic conditions and the Russian Revolution compare is by how there are more social and political ups and downs than there were economic in the french revolution.Rasputin was one of the bigger leaders in the Russian Revolution. He was considered miracle worker because he could help people when doctors couldn't. He was a trusted friend to most. Al though people thought that he was having a affair with the royal wife. That's why not alot of people liked him they always thought he was having an affair with the wife of the king. George Danton was a leader in the french Revelation in a different way than Rasputin was. Geogrge was a president of France. He was the biggest force in the revolution for France. Both the French and the Russian won the wars. There outcomes were the same, both sides won that's why it was called a revolution. In the end of the Russian Revolution there wasn't any difference with the way that the land was and where the money would go. The money and land still belonged to the people with the highest power and the ones that were higher class. After the French Revolution the ending was still that the ruler was Danton and he still powered over everyone.

Book

Fast Food Nation

After reading Fast Food Nation by Eric Schosser you will learn there are alot of things that the fast food places are not letting you in on. Have you ever really wondered what is in the food from McDonald's or Burger King? The book Fast Food Nation really gets into detail about things. This non-fiction book that is telling about things that aren't good about the fast food places, it starts out telling where the food comes from: Farms to factories to the restaurants where they serve it to people like us. Some of the book tells about how most of the fast food chains got started and how they got to where they are now. It tells you alot about the ins and out of what your eating and all of the steps that it takes to get all the things together when making the things you order at McDonald's. The book takes a negative aspect on the fast food places. Its shows how bad they are and the things that they do to the food, which they think are very bad. This book Fast food nation will make you stop and think about what your getting when you go and order from a place like McDonald's.
In this book Fast Food Nation Eric Schosser shows how bad fast food really is. He also shows things about McDonald's like the brothers first made the turn around with fast food. This made it so there were alot of fast food restaurants its mostly started up the fast food chain of restaurants. So there were many factiores starting up, they made things like hamburgers, chicken for all of the restaurants. The factories were the worst to work at, this book also showed the worst jobs that people had to deal with. The enviorment that they had to work in everyday, and it was very unhealthy for them. This Factories produced everything that we order at the fast food restaurants today. Eric Schosser also shows how the fast food place isn't somewhere we should ever eat, his option on the fast food places is very clear. He shows how bad the food is for us to be eating, how we can get really bad diseases like mad cow disease. The big thing that he tries to show is that all fast food is bad and i think he wants no one to eat it.

Mostly this book is showing all the bad things about fast food, what could happen when you eat the food coming from theirs places. Its really opinionated book the author is one way on this issue. It also makes me think about what I'm eating theses times i have no time and that's the only thing that's available. This book should be something that alot of obesity people should be reading, so maybe they will think before the next time they go to eat at there favorite restaurant. I think that alot of people would wake up if they read this book, it would be something like a reality check to them. The author made the theme very clear, he wanted people to know how bad fast food really is, this should be a very important theme to people in America no one realizes what there eating and that they need to stop.

Palmyra Town History

Palmyra is your typical small town, nothings ever going on type of thing. So it would seem like there wouldn't be any history to go along with this small town aspect. Although lots of people think that small towns have nothing to offer, there very much wrong. Palmyra is a small town but it does have alot of things that people would like to know about. It's the unknown history that everyone wants to read about.
Alot of towns and states started out just like Palmyra and even the state of Maine. Palmyra dates way back to its undocumented history, which goes back over millions of years. Its said that the first people living in Maine were Indians from the Algonquin Nation. Although there is no documented live when they were living here, all that is left is the stories that people left behind of the early days of this state. The earliest thing that was documented was over 150 years ago. This was when around the 1600's France and England fought over control of the area of Maine. After the fight for the land ended, England gained control of Maine over France by 1763 and they also got part of Massachcsetts. This was the first time that any territory was claimed around this area. Around 1790 the unsettled territory of Palmyra was part of Lincoln County, it was on of the two counties in Maine at this point in time. Both of the two counties were bought from Massachcsetts and called a township. After things started to get settled around this area, lots of people started making the move to a not very populated area. There were alot of people that came to this area around 1807. That same year a meeting was held concering a petition that was being sent out to get "the rights and privileges of an incorporated town". This Petition was passed. In 1820 Maine gained statehood. The town of Palmyras population grew to 336. Alot of new stores sprung up, and even some churchs. During the Later 1800's the town of palmyra really started to shape up. Things like people voting to build a eight corner pound for keeping of stray animals, also one of the oldest things in the town was bulid in 1870. Over 130 years ago the Palmyra town office on Main street was built. It still remains in the same shape and same spot as it was build over 130 years ago.
As the town began to grow and things started to get going. Lots of things changed within the town, new things started go come into the town and also more people too. Palmyra the town that would now be called Somerset Count, now had a pretty big school up and running. As the school grew the region started to get bigger. Palmyra was also the center of trade and business activity for the region at this time. Backsmith shops, mills were two of the big things going in Palmyra in the 1800's. Shingle Mill was the biggest mill around at the time. And most of the people that attended church would have to of gone to the Church and Grange hall in Palmyra. This church is still standing today, being the only church that is still in Palmyra to date. Another thing that shows how outdated the town is, would have to be the roads and also the houses that were built back in the day that still stand right at this very moment. There use to be only two main roads in the hole town. One being the Country Road (now known as Rote 151), Second Stage road. Both of which were very important to the town and also both of them still are in use today. The other thing that out dates Palmyra are the houses still standing around, some which were built by the earlist settlers around the 1800's when people were really seltting around this area. During the 1840's the largest estates was owned by Royal Clark, Michael Hanson, Daniel Hanson, Stephen Hilton and Reuben Homestead. The reason that this was documented was because alot of people liked to have a big house around this time, if they didn't have alot of other things to show off why not there big house. Another fact that isn't well known is that Jeremiah Robinson built the first farm house, also still standing today. There was a house always called the "new house", still standing today is known as the Furbusg place to people now. It was built in 1802. This house took a very long tim to build because of its massive size. The original house was bigger than it appears now. The price of the house back in the days when it was built was around $1700. This constisted of two barns, one other good building, six tilled acres, raised indian corn, cheat, oats, beans, and potatos.
Coming from the Furbush house there is alot of history from the road that this massive sized house sits on. Dr. Warren was the man that owned and bought Palmyra. Born July 27, 1753 and also graduating from one of the best schools Harvard in 1771 he was settled in boston. He was a surgeon till around 1777, he found the first medical school in New England at Cambridge around 1781. Dr. John Warren from Boston bought Maine from the common weath on June 12, 1800 with the cost being 7,666.89 for 28,200 aces more or less. After buying all of this land Warrens family stayed around the Palmyra area. He made the rule that anyone who came before him could keep 100 acres of land by paying 5 dollars. The first settlers arrived at the invitaion of Dr. Warren. They had to purchase land from him or not have any at all. Although of the steep prices he put on the land for newcomers to buy land, there was still 20 families sellted in the 1800's within one year. And 20 more within 5 years after that he was very successful with people settled around 6,600. Although no one really could figure out what the name Palmyra really ment, some say that the name came from Dr. Warrens wife. She gave the name to the town in the memory of her daughter Myra out of love. This was her daughter that died at birth. Alot of things happened during the time of Warrens life to the town of Palmyra like on June 20, 1807 Massachcsettsgovernor James Jullivan signed the act, and approved the anem of Palmyra to this Area. And After the Revolutionary War Massachusetts was in debt, they sold more land to Dr. Warren trying to get some of there debt payed back. Although Dr. Warren owned this area, had his own very big house here he never lived here and visted the area alot. It was like a vacation house to his family. Warren died April 3, 1815. He left his land on Warren Hill Road in Palmyra to his brother Joseph Warren although he died not much later.
After thinking that Palmyra was a small town that had nothing to offer, i've rethought about the things i thought after researching this topic. Palmyra may be a pretty small town but this town has more to offer than you would think. Alot of the things that are intresting about the town are behind the senses. Most of the history dates back really far from this town. There were many great things that happend back in the day. This was a hot spot back when Dr. Warren was around, he made this town what it is today. So all the people think that little towns have nothing, no history and also nothing to offer thing again because ones you get into all of the things that happened you'll be knee deep into all of it!
